GRACE Uganda Research Project - WOUGNET

The Gender Research in Africa into ICTs for Empowerment (GRACE) project aims to explore the ways in which women in Africa use ICTs to empower themselves, the external, structural barriers as well as the internal factors which prevent them from using ICTs to their advantage, and the strategies they employ to overcome these impediments. The project comprises 15 sub-projects, reflecting 14 research sites in 12 countries and one meta research sub project.

Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET), http://www.wougnet.org, is one of the organisations participating in the GRACE project, and our research project is “Uptake and Impact of the CD-ROM Rural Women in Africa: Ideas for Earning Money on Grassroots Women Entrepreneurs in Uganda”. The goal is to assess the uptake and impact of the CD-ROM on rural women entrepreneurs in Uganda. There is also need to gain a clear understanding of the implications for appropriate ICTs for rural entrepreneurship, accounting for gender concerns. It is expected that participation in this project and the research findings should help drive WOUGNET’s mission to promote and support the use of ICTs among women and women organisations in Uganda.

The primary research question is ‘How have grassroot women entrepreneurs used the CD-ROM Rural Women in Africa: Ideas for Earning and what is the impact created on their livelihoods?’ Specific research objectives include:

Examining how the CD-ROM Rural Women in Africa: Ideas for Earning Money has been used by grassroot women entrepreneurs

Assessing the factors that have facilitated their uptake of the CD-ROM,

Examining how the use of the CD-ROM has empowered grassroot women entrepreneurs’ livelihoods. This will include among others aspects like ideas for starting businesses, business performance, and attitudes to business, sharing and networking, information seeking and technical skills in ICT use.

Generating ideas on the information requirements for rural women and how appropriately this information should be packaged.

The main research output will be a report on the experiences of women with the CD-ROM. In particular how they have applied the CD-ROM, its impact on their lives, and areas where information packaging is urgently required. A CD on the women’s experiences will also be produced.
